While in the think of preparing for my son’s birth, I was desperately trying to create the perfect “nest” for him to come home to. I had found the most darling whimsical woodland create prints from Sea Urchin Studios. I loved them so much that I wanted to create the entire nursery around them, but I couldn’t find any patterned fabrics to match their modern primary colors.
So, what’s a pregnant artist to do? Compromise her vision?! No! She designs her own fabrics, of course!

That’s when I met Spoonflower — a company that provides print-on-demand textile services. (Think CafePress or Zazzle but for fabric yardage, wallpaper and giftwrap.) In Photoshop, I created several different designs — chevrons, sketched alphabet, leaves, stripes, gingham, diamonds and polka dots — in a variety of modern primary colors — carrot, sunshine, teal, taupe and chocolate. Then I uploaded the images to Spoonflower, configured them in a few different sizes and ordered samples. I was pleased with the quality of the fabric and print job, so I ordered yards and yards more to full furnish my sons Woodland Adventure Nursery.
UPDATE: Even though I made the fabrics just for my son’s nursery, I set the Modern Nursery Prints as available for purchase. Now, every few days or so, I get an email saying someone favorited or purchased one of my designs. Pretty sweet passive commission!
UPDATED AGAIN: One of these Modern Nursery Prints, Large Colorful Leaves, was featured in the HGTV Magazine July/August 2015 edition! I feel like I’ve “arrived”!
